CASE STUDY: Designing a Knowledge Systems Playbook
Publication Design, Information Architecture & Anonymous Portfolio Adaptation
This playbook was originally created as a long-form strategic publication for a professional services organization and was published as a significant asset for the company’s external communications and thought leadership efforts.
For portfolio purposes, the selected pages shown here have been adapted into an anonymized sample version. Company identifiers, proprietary language, and original subject-specific copy have been removed or rewritten, while preserving the structure, visual system, and editorial approach of the original piece.
The goal of this project was to transform complex, information-heavy material into a polished, accessible publication that could guide readers through a sophisticated business topic with clarity, pacing, and visual confidence.
MY ROLE
I supported the development of the playbook as a designed publication system, focusing on visual organization, page hierarchy, layout consistency, and reader flow. The work included structuring dense content into a more digestible format, creating a refined editorial look, and helping the document function as both a practical guide and a polished brand asset.

THE DESIGN CHALLENGE
The original material contained complex business ideas that needed to feel credible, organized, and easy to follow. Rather than treating the document as a simple report, the design needed to elevate it into a thoughtful publication that aligned with new branding that could support the organization’s expertise and serve as a lasting resource.
The challenge was to create a file that felt substantial without becoming visually overwhelming. Each page needed to help the reader understand where they were in the document, what mattered most, and how the information connected to the larger story.
THE APPROACH
I approached the playbook as a guided reading experience. The cover establishes a polished, professional tone, while the section opener creates breathing room before moving into more information-dense pages. Chart, framework, process, and checklist pages were each designed with a different visual function, giving the reader a mix of data, explanation, action steps, and practical takeaway tools.
The visual system uses a restrained color palette, strong typographic contrast, structured spacing, and recurring page elements to create consistency throughout the document. This helps the playbook feel cohesive while still allowing individual pages to serve different purposes.

Because the original playbook was created for a specific organization, this portfolio version has been adapted to protect confidential and identifying details. The company name, logo, URL, client-specific language, and original subject matter have been removed or rewritten.
The sample pages now use a generalized “Knowledge Systems” theme to demonstrate the design strategy without revealing proprietary content. This allows the work to show the underlying capabilities behind the project: publication design, content organization, editorial pacing, visual hierarchy, and systems-based thinking.
